I’ve been doing something over on my facebook page lately – I post a Fairy Tale Character of the Week and a Vampire of the Week. I have some catching up to do here, but I’ll start with today’s Fairy Tale Character.
The original Rumplestiltskin (or Rumpelstilzchen) was written by the Brothers Grimm in 1812. Rumplestiltskin is an impish creature who can spin straw into gold and does so for a miller’s daughter to save her from being killed by the king. (thanks, Dad, for promising the impossible!)
He saves her three times and in return, asks for her firstborn child.
Grief stricken, the miller’s daughter, now the Queen, begs for him to let her keep her child. He says she can keep it only if she guesses his name, a seemingly impossible task.
Luckily, a messenger of the Queen overhears the imp singing his name (who does that?) and guesses it on the third day.
In one version, he simply runs away. In a later version, he literally rips himself in half.
As Rumple from “Once Upon A Time” says, “All Magic comes with a price!”
Here’s a sneak peek at our Rumple project from “Once Upon A Knit.”
